Dogs don't have the level of intelligence of humans so you cannot expect your dog to be your intellectual equal. If you believe your dog is thinking as a human, you will be disappointed. In this article you are going to learn the proper way to treat your dog during the training process.
If you have gotten a dog or puppy and you have crate trained them you should always try not to keep them in there for more than four or five hours at a time unless it's overnight or it's just a once-in-awhile thing. If you have to have them in the crate for longer periods of time, a dog probably wasn't the best option for you.
When you are training your dog and establishing your leadership role, do not be adverse to letting the dog lick you on the face. This is common behavior in dogs when dealing with the Alpha in the pack. Do not discourage this behavior as it can confuse the animal and confuse your role because you do not show proper response to this servile behavior.
Give your puppy something to chew on. Having specific items for this purpose will help to train them not to chew on everything. This will reinforce good behavior.
Most dogs respond better to positive reinforcement rather than negative punishment. If you're trying to train your dog, reward him for good behavior and only scold him if absolutely necessary. Your dog will remember the reward for good behavior more distinctly than the punishment for bad behavior, making rewarding more effective.
One of the first things most people teach their dogs is the sit command. This is very basic but is handy for your dog to know, especially when you want to get his attention. One way to teach your dog to sit is to take a piece of dog treat and hold it about six inches from his nose. Slowly raise the treat straight up and say "Fido, sit". You may have to use your hand to help him into the position until he realizes what you want.
A dog owner who attempts to train his or her pet while angry will never be successful. Dogs are extremely sensitive creatures, and they can sense their owners' displeasure. Anger and dissatisfaction with a dog's performance can poison an entire training program. A dog trainer who becomes angry with their pet's performance should take a break and calm down before continuing their training program.
When you are training your dog with a leash, try to ensure that the leash is loose. When dogs go on walks, they frequently want to explore all the new sights and sounds. Their eagerness will cause the leash to be strained. Some owners do not encourage this behavior and instead, allow some slack on the leash.
Check with the community management's pet policy. Pet lover families can be in trouble when moving from a home with a generous pet policy to a place where no pets are allowed. Move to a place where the pet policy allows you to keep your family friends. Don't give them up just because the first place you find has a no pet policy.
If your dog is not fond of unfamiliar men, consider this tip to curb Cujo. Keep a jar of treats near the entrance of your home. Bring new people around who love dogs and understand the situation, and have them treat your pooch. They should extend the treat out sideways from their body, without looking at the dog. It's non-confrontational and teaches the dog that new people are exciting.
When training your dog don't go all out. If you are working with a puppy only work on one skill a week, until your dog has mastered it. Keep your training sessions short and your dog will retain more. You are both less likely to get frustrated this way.
You must consistently dedicate time to Dog Training. Dogs learn best when your training program is applied consistently day after day. The act of spending time with your pet dog daily can convince them that you are reliable and consistent. This will help you establish yourself as pack leader.
If you have an old dog, he may become grouchy and nervous. This is because older dogs often lose their vision, hearing, and/or sense of smell. This can cause them to feel uncertain and vulnerable. Be sure to keep things consistent for your old dog. Set up a comfortable area where he can always count on finding his comfy bed, favorite toy and a dish of food and water.
As you start the process of Dog Training, do not make the assumption that the dog won't bite you simply because you fancy yourself superior. It is possible that your pet may view you as a peer rather than as a leader. Therefore, show your dog who is boss from the onset to avoid this. Staying on the same page with your dog and calming their emotions is optimal while training.
Leaders should always go first, and you should teach that to your dog. If you walk through doors and your dog rushes past you through the opening, it means you do not have control and your dog believes he is leader. Blocking the door so he can't get through first, or teaching him to sit or stay while you walk ahead, helps him understand he needs to stop and follow your lead.
After learning some helpful hints on how to get through to your dog and train it to behave to your expectations you simply need to follow what you have learned. After changing your dogs behavior to fit with the tips suggested you can properly train your dog.
